Your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him…. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. –-Matthew 6:8, 33
The day came when the Holy Spirit said, "Why should you be giving seven hours a day of your time to an earthly master? Leave that now and come and work for me. Do you believe that I can keep you?" I was on the Black Mountain at the time and the Lord said, "If you believe that I can keep you, put up your hand and tell me, ‘I shall not take from a thread to a shoe-latchet from any person unless the Lord tells me.’ " So as Abraham refused to take the spoils of war, I put up my hand and made the vow (Genesis 14.22, 23). He told me not to take a meal at home without paying for it and I said, "I will go out as your earthly disciples did. Do not change for me the principle that you laid down for them." (Matthew 10.9). I was not now active in the Mission or in contact with many people. My mother was unwilling for me to pay for my meals, but when I insisted that otherwise I would have to leave home she finally gave in. She had hoped that now I was going to live a normal life after the test of being a Nazarite. It was arranged that I would pay every month and I spent the first month alone on the mountain, alone with God, and what a wonderful month it was. The Lord had told me not to pray for money until the time came to pay at home.
When I went home my father said, "The manager has kept your job open for you and you can take it again if you want to." I said, "Why should he do that?" My father said, "If you don’t mean to earn a living again who is to keep you?" I said, "I am working for God and I believe that he can keep me." He said, "Can you name a single person who has lived this life before?" I said, "George Muller." He said, "He is dead. Can’t you name someone who is living?" I said, "Do you believe the words of the Saviour, ‘Take neither purse nor scrip…the labourer is worthy of his hire.’ He said, "I only brought you a message." Just then a letter came from Mr. Gossett offering me a post with the London City Mission at a salary of a £100 a year and he had underlined the words, "Those who preach the Gospel should live of the Gospel." My father was pleased but I said, "Those who preach faith should live by faith." My father laughed and within half an hour I was delivered of the very amount I needed. From that day to this I have never doubted that God would supply my needs.
