BOOK REVIEW: STRATEGY IN FAITH
from The Law of Faith
by Norman P. Grubb
I am finally beginning to understand and appreciate what it means to speak a word of faith. I have known intellectually for some years now that "faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen" (Heb. 11:1). I also have known that Jesus promised "What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them" (Mark 11:24). The problem was that I never took the time to figure out how or why this worked, until recently. Why should or would God just do something for me or give me something just because I desired it?
Because of a desperate situation I found myself in over the past year, Jesus’ promise in Mark 11:24 became important to me. I had to know how it worked and if it could work for me. Then a couple months ago, a person very close to me suggested I read The Law of Faith by Norman Grubb and particularly the chapter entitled "Strategy in Faith." I know this will sound silly and exaggerated, but after I read it, I knew my life would never be the same again. I have been afraid to Say a word of faith about the situation from an independent, earthly stand-point and saw it as hopeless. And since that is how I saw it, I knew I could not say a word of faith about it. But this chapter explained that "to see things from the human aspect, to feel the weight of things, the apparent impossibility of any change is not wrong. It is just natural." After reading that, I could see that everything I was feeling was normal, but I still felt scared, and I felt guilty about feeling scared. Later in the chapter Norman explained that event he hear itself was normal and even necessary. Fear is necessary because it is faith in reverse and if we have had faith in (or believed) that the "worst" will happen, our faith can be reversed to believe that the "best" will happen. I was not sure how this would work, but all I could do was dare to believe it. I told God I was willing to believe that He could turn my situation around. I know that by saying that I began to see my situation through Christ’s eyes. I could no longer see the situation through defeated, doubting Satan eyes. That doesn’t mean that my feelings of doubt went away. I just made a choice (and continue to today) to not believe the worst.
Settling this point was only the beginning. "Strategy in Faith" went on to explain how the process of saying a word of faith works. I challenge anyone who thinks a situation is hopeless to read this chapter as well as the entire book, The Law of Faith.
