John—deeply established in his union relationship with Christ—sheds much light on how we operate from this inner truth. Norman Grubb describes the common struggle of not being able to make the Christian life work, pointing out that we can’t become better people because we are merely vessels operated by the spirit within. When we are born again the spirit of Christ lives in us and it is He who fulfills the commandments. The main emphasis of this letter is that we are as He is: we walk as He walked, we are righteous as He is righteous. Seemingly impossible standards, unless Christ is the operator. Norman explains what real love is, what John means by saying a man born of God does not sin, the three levels of understanding John describes—infancy, adolescence, adulthood—and bountiful other truths providing immense light on how to live the Christian life.
