Book Review: Continuous Revival
Though only forty-six pages long, Continuous Revival is a clear, sharp explanation of what revival means for the Christian, its scriptural basis and how it can operate in our lives. Norman Grubb writes about an experience where he caught the true meaning of revival. Simply stated revival is the reviewing of dead areas in our life.
Norman begins with the walk of the Christian and how it is emphasized in scripture. He goes on to describe the brokenness that is required to walk the Christian life. Brokenness before God first and then our fellow man. Real brokenness produces no shadows between man and God and man to man. This leads to joy and peace in the life of the believer.
The problem, as the author states, lies here. People do not always experience this peace and joy that scripture promises we will have as Christians. Norman points out the reason that we do not experience the flow of the spirit which is peace and joy is unconfessed sin. He then goes on to explain what to do about sin so that we can be restored to a life of inner peace and harmony.
I personally always thought of revival in terms of a special meeting where key speakers were invited. The purpose was to bring people to a saving knowledge of Christ and to encourage believers to a more committed Christian life. After reading Norman’s book, he sheds an entirely new light on the meaning of revival. I came to see revival had to do with the relationship of man to man not just man to God. The focus is on temples (man) containing the Reviver, God living in people. I realized our responsibility to each other as set forth in scripture and the fact that it cannot be ignored.
If you are not experiencing revival, the re-viewing of dead areas in your life, I recommend reading this book. Norman takes what seems complicated and sets forth very simple guidelines for continuous revival that you can have at this very moment!
