Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord?–1 Samuel 15:22
These positions are gained inch by inch. My next place of abiding was to put a soul through who was at a distance from the village. I was to be on two Is a day of plain food and I was not to wear a hat [which was considered socially unacceptable]. A week or two later I was invited up to London to spend a week with Mr. Gossett, to meet Sir Robert Anderson and other leading Christians. The question was: should I break my abiding in order to mix with people like this? In my heart I thought to sacrifice the visit to London and I told the Lord, "I would rather remain an intercessor than go to stay in Buckingham Palace." I was living in a realm where God is and where all men are only mortal men to you. Then the Lord spoke to me, "Can you not abide in London?" I said, "Show me one man in the Bible who has done something like this?" He said, "John the Baptist." Not any money would have tempted me to betray Mr. Gossett’s kindness, but obedience to God would. I did not move from my abiding when I went to London, either in food or in wearing a hat and I was the greatest blessing to Mr. Gossett. It tested him to drive in an on cab with me, without my hat, from Paddington Station to Piccadilly, and he could not face walking through the streets with me like this, but he poured loving kindness on me. The Lord told me that he would make Mr. Gossett’s son the test case of my intercession and that Captain Gossett would not return to the Army until he was a converted man. The Lord told me, "You are going back for two years and after that I will use you for the world."
